HiFolk.co.uk, a human intelligence creators’ page is now live

At Cake we believe AI is harmful, for environmental and ethical reasons. We heard a surprising amount of other creators saying the same thing on LinkedIn and Bluesky. So we built a page where professionals can publicly pledge that they do not use AI in their work.

The page will list designers, developers, writers and other creators who either:

  • do not use AI in their practice
  • use AI extremely minimally: only when required to use client systems where it’s built in

Context

Search summaries and generative AI results are often incorrect, fed by an echo chamber of inaccuracy. But it’s much worse than that…

Research published by the University of Washington in 2021 found AI applications, on top of having huge environmental costs (for cooling servers, operating systems and building hardware), to be unreliable: biased on gender, race and income, with LLMs being impossible to audit and identify training sources – amplifying dominant voices and homogenising language and culture, as English is selected by default.
