Cognitive accessibility basics

Remember, users may be disabled in more than one way.

• Explain things clearly and concisely.
• Use simple words – avoid metaphor, Latin and jargon.
• Use simple sentences, on average 15 words – these are easily to comprehend.
• Do not use flashing images.
• Do not auto-play video content or GIFs.
• Give icons labels.
• Consider adding visuals to clarify concepts.
• Include white space in designs.
• Do not clutter the page.
• Use present simple tense.
• Avoid using contractions and the conditional tense.
• Allow users to save their progress to return to it later.
